The pick for the round locks ordinary tools ignore
Tubular locks hide behind a round keyway with seven tiny pins set in a circle, so a normal hook or rake has nothing to catch. This 7-pin tubular pick works all seven at once, turns the lock, and the decoder reads the cuts so you can do it again in seconds. One round keyway, finally solved.

A clear 7-pin tubular lock. See the round barrel and the ring of pins. You can practise on one of these.
What a tubular lock really is
If you have used a bike U-lock, fed a vending machine, or opened a gun cabinet, an arcade machine, or an alarm or utility panel, you have already met a tubular lock. Instead of a flat slot, it has a round barrel with seven small pins arranged in a circle, and a round key that presses all seven at once.
That circle is the whole point. A standard hook or rake is built for pins in a straight line, so it has nothing to grip here. Tubular locks need a tool shaped like the lock, which is exactly what this is.
Pick all seven at once, then read the cuts
The tool carries seven fine needles set in the same ring as the lock. You seat it in the keyway, add light turning pressure, and ease the needles in until every pin finds its shear line and the barrel turns. It is a surprisingly satisfying lock to open, because all seven give way together.
Seven needles, one motion
The needles match the ring of pins, so one steady push works the whole lock at the same time.
The decoder reads the depths
Once it opens, the decoder shows how far each pin set, so you can capture the bitting and repeat the open.
Set it and return
Read the lock once, set the tool to match, and the next open is faster still.
Level the needles, then let the lock turn
Tubular picking rewards a light, even hand far more than force. Get the needles level first, enter the keyway square, and let the feedback do the talking.
- Level the needles on a flat surface so they start even.
- Insert square to the lock and add gentle, steady turning pressure.
- Ease the needles in together and feel each pin settle.
- When it turns, read the decoder and capture the bitting.

Quick answers
What is a tubular lock?
A round-keyway lock with seven pins set in a circle. You meet them on bike locks, vending and arcade machines, gun and tool cabinets, and some alarm panels and padlocks.
Will it open my front door lock?
This one is made for tubular locks, the round-keyway kind. For a standard door cylinder, reach for a pin-cylinder pick set instead.
What does the decoder do?
It reads how deep each of the seven pins set once the lock turns, so you can record the bitting and repeat the open quickly.
I have never picked a tubular lock. Is that ok?
Yes. Start on a clear tubular practice lock so you can watch the pins, and the knack comes quickly. The motion is gentle and even, not forceful.
Solve the round keyway
Give the tubular locks in your life the tool that finally fits them. Pick all seven pins at once, read the cuts, and open them again whenever you like.
