Clear practice lock FAQ

Is a clear practice lock worth it?

Yes, for your first few weeks. Seeing the pins set helps you understand what you're feeling through the pick and spot your mistakes. Once you can open it while watching the pins, pick it facing away.

Are clear locks easier than real locks?

They are, a little. Acrylic locks have looser tolerances than metal ones, and most use standard pins, which makes the basics easier to learn. When you're ready, step up to spool and serrated pins or a metal practice lock.

What else do I need?

You'll need a hook pick and a tension wrench. If you're starting from nothing, the Lokko Beginners Box includes picks, tensioners and two clear practice locks.

What's the difference between a clear lock and a cutaway lock?

A clear lock is see-through acrylic all over. A cutaway lock is a real metal lock with a window machined into it, so it feels closer to a door lock while still showing the pins.

When should I move on from a clear lock?

Move on when you can open it reliably with the lock turned away from you. After that, try the spool and serrated locks in the EUREKA set, or a metal practice lock.
