What a tubular lock really is
If you have used a bike U-lock, fed a vending machine, or opened a gun cabinet, an arcade machine, or an alarm or utility panel, you have already met a tubular lock. Instead of a flat slot, it has a round barrel with seven small pins arranged in a circle, and a round key that presses all seven at once.
That circle is the whole point. A standard hook or rake is built for pins in a straight line, so it has nothing to grip here. Tubular locks need a tool shaped like the lock, which is exactly what this is.
Pick all seven at once, then read the cuts
The tool carries seven fine needles set in the same ring as the lock. You seat it in the keyway, add light turning pressure, and ease the needles in until every pin finds its shear line and the barrel turns. It is a surprisingly satisfying lock to open, because all seven give way together.

The decoder reads the depths
